Horror: A genre that pursues the main goal of scaring the viewers and playing on their fears using a range of techniques from gore to jump scares whilst telling a story. All horrors have a protagonist and an antagonist. Some sub-genres are body horror, supernatural horror, psychological horror, slasher, post modern ironic horror, Japanese and gothic horror.

Scream 1996


Thriller: A genre that may contain a complex storyline that raises anticipation, excitement, fear, surprise and/or anxiety within its audience, however, all types of thriller raise the viewers adrenaline. The thriller genre could include many themes, for example a chase scene, crime related, top secret spies and psychological mind games etc. The atmosphere of thriller movies can range from dark and eerie to intense and exciting. Some sub-genres are spy thrillers, supernatural, romantic, psychological thriller, stalker and forensic thrillers.

Inception 2010
Drama: A genre that relies heavily on emotional storylines involving realistic characters in situations that are relatable to the audience. Dramatic themes and actors play a large role in the plot and making the movie successful. Often, these dramatic themes are taken from intense, real life situations. Some sub-genres are romantic drama, biological, melodramas and sports dramas.


The Room 2016
Romantic Drama: A genre that tells a dramatic story between two people that are in love or sexually attracted to one another, in the movie they will experience obstacles related to their relationship or the plot of the film may be how they meet. Many romantic dramas finish with the separation of the couple because the obstacle is too big to defeat and over come therefore, they cannot be together. A good example of this is the Titanic, Rose and Jack cannot be together because of the situation that they are in.
Titanic 1997

Romantic Comedy: A genre that follows the story of romance however, with added humour. Jokes and funny moments will be included in the movie whilst romantic connotations are still present, some parts of the film may be serious whilst some are humorous. Some examples of romantic comedies are Bridget Jone's Diary, Love Actually, 50 First Dates, Pretty Woman and many more.
 

Love Actually 2003
Action: A genre that follows a complicated storyline with fast paced editing. They typically include fight scenes, car races/crashes, explosions and legal aspects. An action film may be a superhero movie where the characters have supernatural and super human powers, such as Captain America or on the other hand, it may be a crime related movie, such as Jason Bourne. Some sub-genres of action are superhero/cartoon action, suspense action, crime, car themed action and chase films.

Fast and Furious 7 2015
Science Fiction: A genre that tells a dramatic story with supernatural and space/galaxy connotations. Many science fiction movies are battles between two different species of space creatures, within the storyline there is an obstacle to overcome and they often lead to a big final battle at the end of the film. They involve a lot of action and sometime a romantic side story. Some sub-genres are apocalyptic, holocaust, post-apocalyptic, time-travel, military and space opera.


Star Trek 2009
Mystery: A fictional genre in which a detective, or other professional, solves a crime or series of crimes. It can take the form of a novel or short story. This genre may also be called detective or crime novels. Some sub-genres are detective, historical and humorous mystery.
