Initial Ideas for Locations
Initial Ideas for Locations
We decided that we wanted our film opening to be set within the woods to create an eerie, dark atmosphere to fit the thriller genre, therefore we looked into different options of wood scenery that we would be able to film in.
Cyclopark:
Our first idea was Cyclopark in Gravesend as it is quite close to us meaning we can easily go there to film any pieces we need to, and because it is such a huge woodland, we thought it would be perfect for our genre and plot line.
+ We will be able to use the security dog in this area because it is an open space
+ There is extremely easy access to the park
+ It will fit the genre because of the creepy woodland area and dark, mysterious lighting
- We have to be very cautious with the time of day that we decide to film due to the natural lighting
we want to use, especially considering that in winter it gets dark very quickly and this could mean none of our shots are clear enough
Danson Park:
We also considered Danson Park in Bexleyheath because of the larger, safer space we could use to film the dog scenes.
+ The park is very large meaning we would have a range of settings to choose from for our filming
+ Danson Park is a lot more local to us which would allow for us to film more easily as and when needed
+ The spacious areas would mean we could easily set up camera equipment without any risks
- Danson Park can become very crowded at times so the noise and interruptions could become an issue when trying to film under time constraints
Joydens Wood:
We realised we would need a shed to film the section of our opening with the farmer in as we want him to be working in his worksheet, therefore had to research into where we could film a run-down shed.
+ In a small woods, there is a very broken down shed that would fit the character profile of the farmer perfectly, and would look very spine-chilling.
+ The area is extremely overgrown which would fit the idea of the film opening
+ The lighting would fit the genre perfectly due to how overgrown and shaded the woodland is
- The woods is very small and so would not leave us much room to get shots that would look good for our opening
- There is a road alongside this small woodland with a row of houses, which could become a problem with sound when filming
Eltham Park North:
Another option we considered was Eltham Park North because of its ghostly-looking walkways and forest-like trees.
+ There is a small, woodland clearing which would be perfect for us to film the part where the main girl trips over the bone and is attacked by the dog
- The park is very popular with dog-walkers so could prove to be an issue when filming our security dog shots
Bursted Wood:
Bursted Wood in Barnehurst is a very local option that we could use to film the chase scene near the very beginning, especially considering it is a relatively small park which is not used very often by the public.
+ The winding woodland walkways in the forest area would be perfect for the chase scene because of the alarming nature of the setting
+ The area is very overgrown which would fit the idea we are trying to convey about the farmer's private land
- It is situated right next to a main road which could be an issue for sound
- There is a mental health institute just behind the park which may be a problem when filming threatening scenes
Final Ideas:
After researching different locations and weighing up the pros and cons, we have decided to use Cyclopark, the security dog's training grounds and Chloee's garden shed, mostly down to the safety issue that comes with filming in public areas. Cyclopark seems to be our best option for filming the main girl walking into the woods before being chased, as we would be able to put up our 'Private Land' sign and would not disrupt the public. the security dog's training grounds would also be the best option, as when speaking to the owner, we were told he could not be left off a leash in public so this would be our safer choice. Finally, we decided to use Chloee's garden shed as it would allow for us to do what we want with the space in order to make the farmer seem as threatening as possible.
